Illuminate
Typography Exercise
This project presents three different interpretations of the word “illuminate” in three different styles that relate back to the core meaning of the word.
Calligraphy: The goal for this version was to create a hand-lettered piece that took inspiration from the art of illuminating manuscripts by writing the word out with a brush. The final piece is hand-lettered using red watercolor paint on paper.
Dimensional: The goal for this version was to create a piece that combined dimensional texture with blackletter forms to create a strong presence of light and shadow. The final piece was rendered digitally to emphasize the three-dimensional nature of the letters.
Physical: The goal for this version was to create a blackletter piece that combined hand cut letter forms and a real light source to achieve a physical representation of the word. The final piece was created by cutting the letters out of card stock, lighting it from behind, and photographing the word.
